A Little Southern
Miss History
On March 30, 1910, the University of Southern Mississippi
was founded as Mississippi Normal College, a teacher-training school. The
opening session of instruction was held on September 18, 1912. For its first-ever
session, Mississippi Normal College had 876 students enrolled. As it grew and
developed, the school changed its name to Mississippi State Teachers College in
1924. In 1940, it became Mississippi Southern College.
Starting in 1955, the campus expanded with the construction
of 17 new structures On February 27, 1962, the Governor signed a bill into law that
officially upgraded the school to a university and renamed it as the University
of Southern Mississippi.
Today, An Educational
Powerhouse
University of Southern currently has a total undergraduate
enrollment of 11,840, on a campus that is 1,090 acres in size. The University
has two campuses: the main campus in Hattiesburg and a location in Long Beach called
Southern Miss Gulf Coast.
Southern Miss students come from all
over Mississippi, all parts of the United States, and 67 foreign countries.
Students can choose from more than 180 undergraduate and graduate degree
programs in six different degree-granting colleges. The university also offers
study-abroad programs in 21 countries.
Some notable Southern Miss graduates include musician Jimmy
Buffett and NFL quarterback Brett Favre.
An Amazing Variety Of
Campus Life
On the Hattiesburg campus, there are over 280 student
organizations to choose from. First-year students all live in the Freshman
Quad. Around one in five students join sororities and fraternities, with Greek
housing open to participating upperclassmen, both men and women.
Football games are very popular, starting with a pep rally
the night before each home game, and a parade before each match. The Southern
Miss Golden Eagles teams compete in the NCAA Division I Conference.
